Book Reviews

These are some reviews from a recent issue of The Civil War News:

Struggle for a Vast Future.

Edited by Aaron Sheehan-Dean.

Illustrated, maps, endnotes, bibliography, index, 272 pp., 2006. Osprey Publishing Ltd., 443 Park Ave. S, New York, NY 10016 2006, $29.95 plus shipping.

Struggle for a Vast Future is comprised of a dozen essays, which address some of the Civil War’s major themes. Written by notable scholars, the essays offer excellent overviews that range from the secession movement, to political and military leadership, to the war on the waters, in the Trans-Mississippi, and to the conflict’s legacy. The writers’ contributions are well-written, informative and thought-provoking.

The topics covered also include the common soldiers, the nature of the war, espionage and raids, the home front, emancipation, and the conflict from the perspective of Europeans.

The contributors include William A. Blair on secession, Richard Carwardine on political leadership, Robert K. Krick on military leaders, Gerald Prokopowicz on the armies’ rank and file, and Mark Grimsley on the evolution of warfare during the four years;

Also, Craig Symonds on the navies, Jeffery Prushankin on the war beyond the Mississippi, William B. Feis on military intelligence and covert actions, Victoria E. Bynum on civilians at home, Michael Vorenberg on freedom for slaves, Hugh Dubrulle on Europe and the American conflict and Aaron Sheehan-Dean on the Civil War’s enduring memory.

This is a book that will please both scholars and students of the Civil War. The essays serve as both an introduction to broad topics and as compelling analyses of them. The book is an attractive work, printed on quality paper. At current prices for new books, this one is a bargain.

The editor, Dr. Sheehan-Dean, and the contributors are to be commended for the book’s breadth of topics and the quality of the essays. Struggle for a Vast Future is recommended as an engaging and informative work.
