20 Good Reasons To Study The Civil War by John C. Waugh. Softcover, 96 pp., 2004. McWhiney Foundation Press, McMurry Station, Box 637, Abilene, TX 79697-0637, $12.95 plus shipping. This short volume provides some thought-provoking insights into why one should study our American Civil War. Though each person will have his or her own reasons for learning about the war, at least some of Waugh’s 20 will be part of that list. Almost everything one might think of is included here: slavery, politics, religion, journalism, literature, bravery, brotherhood and technology, just to name a few. The Civil War was a great drama, it still speaks to us, it makes us remember our past and it makes us, as Americans, what we are today. One tale told by the author especially struck me. He said: “I am in constant reunion with that epic passage in the American past. Every day I go back to it and every day I am enriched by it. My wife never knows if I will be home again in this century in time for dinner.” As I left my local watering-hole (and before I read this book) after lunch today, heading back to my computer and work, I said to my waitress, “Well, back to 3 p.m. July 1, 1863.” I was eagerly going back to study and learn more about our history. Waugh is an engaging writer and his story flows well. At the end of the volume he gives a short list of the books that have inspired him to study the war. Do you remember that first book you read on the war that got you hooked? — I do. 20 Good Reasons To Study The Civil War is a quick easy read and I heartily recommend it.
