Book Reviews

These are some reviews from a recent issue of The Civil War News:

35 Days to Gettysburg: The Campaign Diaries of Two American Enemies

by Mark Nesbitt.

Illustrated, maps, softcover, index, 208 pp., 2002 reprint. Stackpole Books, 5067 Ritter Rd., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, $14.95 plus shipping.

In this intriguing volume author Nesbitt includes two diaries, one written by Sgt. Thomas L. Ware (Co. G, 15th Georgia) and another by Sgt. Franklin Horner (Co. H, 12th Pennsylvania Reserves). The two men fought in close proximity to each other at the battle of Gettysburg, one on Houck’s Ridge, the other on nearby Big Round Top.

On the whole, Ware’s diary is much better in detail than his Northern counterpart’s. Ware’s regiment was part of Hood’s division and was active during the campaign, while Horner’s unit did not leave the Washington area until June 25.

Nesbitt’s commentary gives background, corrects or explains camp gossip, identifies indi-viduals and places mentioned in the diaries, and adds information on the daily routines of Civil War soldiers.

All in all this volume is a welcome addition to any Gettysburg library. (See review by Richard A. Sauers in the July 1993 issue of The Civil War News)
