Troiani Talk, Encampment To Benefit Mansfield House
MIDDLETOWN, Conn.
Historical artist Don Troiani will present a special
program for the Middlesex County Historical Society at 7 p.m.
on Nov. 4. The following day a Civil War encampment, exhibit
and talk will be held.
Troiani, whose paintings are notable for their
detail, will explain the research he does to make every scene
historically accurate, from the weather conditions at the time
to the soldiers' uniforms and weapons. By visiting battlefields,
examining artifacts, and reading soldiers' diaries, the artist
gleans the minutiae that make his paintings come alive with
a feeling of authenticity and immediacy.
"An Evening with Don Troiani" will be held at
the First Baptist Church, 93 Main St. Following the program,
a reception with the artist will be held next door at the General
Mansfield House, the historical society's headquarters. A museum
exhibit of Civil War artifacts will be on display.
Seating for the event is limited. Tickets at $12.50
for the public, $10 for historical society members may be purchased
in advance. On Sunday, Nov. 5, from 11 to 4 the historical society
will hold Civil War Day, an annual event which includes reenactors,
a special speaker, and an artifacts exhibit. At a re-created
Union camp on the grounds of the General Mansfield House, reenactors
will hold marching and firing drills and talk about the infantry
soldier's life. Inside the Mansfield House, visitors will be
able to examine seldom-seen Civil War objects including a worn
shelter-half, photographs, firearms, uniforms, soldiers' letters
and diaries. Dr. Mick Bedard will present a program on Civil
War medicine, in which he will portray Asst. Regimental Surgeon
Brigham Hadley.
Civil War Day admission is $5 for the public and
$3 for historical society members.
Proceeds from both programs will benefit the restoration
of the General Mansfield House, the home of Union Gen. Joseph
K.F. Mansfield until his death in the Battle of Antietam in
1862.
The house is located at 151 Main St. Troiani program
