Nov. 18 Texas Seminar To Focus On Common Soldier
HILLSBORO, Texas

The Texas Civil War Preservation Seminar will hold its seventh annual seminar on Sat- urday, Nov. 18, at the Harold B. Simpson History Complex on the central Texas campus of Hill College in Hillsboro. The seminar is sponsored by the Simpson History Complex, the Austin Civil War Round Table, and the Waco Civil War Round Table.

The theme will be "Johnny Reb & Billy Yank: Hands On," a salute to the common soldier, according to co-chairmen Dan Laney, who is President of the Austin Civil War Round Table and Secretary and Trustee of the Civil War Preservation Trust, and Buddy Patterson, Dean of the Simpson History Complex.

Speakers are: Robert E. Lee Hodge, "Marse Robert's Boys: Soldiering in the Army of Northern Virginia;" Steve von Roeder, "A Living History Primer;" Dr. Joe Glatthaar, "Father Abraham's Boys: The Lives of Billy Yank;" Thomas Cartwright, "The Boys of the Army of Tennessee: Their Lives and Experiences."

An encampment will be set up on the grounds to allow seminar attendees to experience a bit of the Civil War soldier's life.

The seminar will also feature a special "Civil War Preservation Breakfast" with living historian Steve von Roeder previewing the days' activities, a raffle of the Don Troiani print "Drive Them to Washington" featuring Stonewall Jackson and his men, book show, and other vendors as well as a special "patron" lunch with the seminar speakers.

The seminar has become a mainstay on the Texas historical scene and is proud that in its six years it has raised approximately $75,000 for Civil War battlefield preservation, the Simpson History Complex, and other vital Civil War preservation.

Two-thirds of the seminar proceeds will go to the Civil War Preservation Trust for use in saving battlefields. The remaining funds will go to the Harold B. Simpson History Complex. According to Patterson, the mission of the Simpson Complex is "to relate the experiences of Texans at war and, accordingly, the museum at the complex fea- tures many fascinating and informative displays along with an outstanding archive of original source materials, espe- cially related to the Civil War."
