Artifacts From Marylanders At Baltimore Museum
December '01 issue

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Maryland Historical Society (MDHS) and The Friends of President Street Station opened a display at The Baltimore Civil War Museum of military artifacts used by Marylanders during the Civil War.
All are authenticated and identified to individuals who fought and died on both sides.

Highlights of the presentation include a Union cavalry saber and scabbard used by Lt. William Ritter, C.S.A. They were made by Mansfield and Lamb of Smithfield, R.I., in 1864; also, a Colt Model 1851 .36 caliber Navy Percussion Revolver, patent No. 105 - 103105-S from New York, 1861.

The exhibit includes a Union sawtooth bayonet patented by F.W. Alexander of the Baltimore Light Artillery which was recovered from Fort McHenry with Confederate .36 caliber Army revolver, serial no. 493, belonging to Maj. Thomas William Hall, C.S.A., and made by Spiller & Burr of Atlanta, Ga.

Also featured is a bowie knife belonging to Lt. Col. James Williamson of the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A., "Mosby's Rangers." He was from Baltimore City and passed on the weapon to his grandson, Bernard, who donated it to the MDHS.

Another piece is the light artillery saber and scabbard of Brig. Gen. Charles Sidney Winder, C.S.A. of Easton, Md. He was a graduate of the West Point Class of 1850 and was killed in action during the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Va., while in command of the Stonewall Division on Aug. 9, 1862.

The exhibit will be open through 2002.

The expansion and additions to exhibits at the Baltimore Civil War Museum signal the cooperation between the non-profit Friends of President Street Station and the museum's new proprietors, The Maryland Historical Society.

The museum is open 10-5 daily and features the station's history as a rail depot and Underground Railroad destina-tion as well as the many stories pertaining to the role of Maryland and its people during the American Civil War.
