(July2011 Civil War News)
BAILEY’S CROSSROADS, Va. — Plans are set for a conference, concert, period ball and Grand Review reenactment the weekend of Nov. 11 and 12 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Grand Review of the troops at Bailey’s Crossroads on Nov. 20, 1861.
The Lincoln at the Crossroads Alliance (LATCRA), in partnership with the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Alexandria Campus and the Bailey’s Crossroads Revitalization Corporation, has organized the commemoration.
All of the events, except the ball, are free.
The 1861 parade of 70,000 soldiers signaled to Lincoln that he had a ready army. Thirty thousand spectators came to watch Gen. George McClellan’s troops in a review that took 10 hours to complete.
The Saturday, Nov. 12, Commemoration Parade route will include Leesburg Pike, part of the route used in 1861. The parade will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 11.
Civil War reenactors, active military, period civilians, citizen organizations and school groups, along with ceremonial units for each military branch and bands, will march.
Registration forms for those who would like to be in the parade are on the Reenactors page at www.latcra.org.
On Friday the “At the Crossroads of History: Bailey’s Through the Centuries” conference will be held from 8:30 to 3:30 at the NOVA Alexandria Campus.
That evening a Grand Concert will be held from 7 to 9 p.m.. at NOVA’s Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center.
The day’s activities will culminate with a Period Grand Ball at the Hilton Hotel Alexandria Mark Center from 10 until 12.
