Gettysburg Magazine Is Sold To Longtime Editor Turner
By Kathryn Jorgensen
DAYTON, Ohio — Andy Turner, longtime editor and assistant publisher of The Gettysburg Magazine, has purchased the publication from Mary Younger of Morningside House/Press. Her husband Bob Younger, who died unexpectedly in January, was founder and publisher/editor.
Turner started working as editor of the magazine and books published by Morningside in 1993. He was editor for 17 of the 35 issues of The Gettysburg Magazine, the most recent of which was published in July. He also teaches eighth-grade U.S. history in Kettering, Ohio.
Turner says he plans to continue publishing twice a year, January and July, and to keep the magazine at 128 pages as it has been. The staff of assistant editors, cartographer and photo consultants will continue.
He is looking into adding color photography and hopes to continue it without advertising, as Bob Younger wanted it.
“I understand that finances might not allow that to happen, but I'm going to try hard to make it happen,” Turner says. The masthead under the Youngers noted that Morningside subsidized the magazine.
“I am always looking for manuscripts and encourage people to send material on things other than just battle actions, such as articles about civilians, the town, the battlefield since the time of the battle, etc.,” he says.
Turner is also planning a Gettysburg Magazine Civil War Photo Tour with Sonny Fulks, who was the magazine’s photo editor for the first eight issues.
They plan two tours a year that will cover history and teach photography, with participants having a chance for their photos to appear in the magazine. The fall tour would be to Gettysburg, while the spring tour would visit a different battlefield.
Subscriptions and single issues of the magazine are still available through Turner (issues 1 to 5, 8, 10, 13 and 14 are out of print). He hopes to expand the number of sale locations.
Turner can be reached at turner43@sbcglobal.net or (937) 258-5719. The magazine’s new address is P.O. Box 1311, Dayton, OH 45401. A Web site is planned.
